Here at Alaska Means Business, we are steadfast in our support for those brave Alaskans that would attempt to feed us quality foods, produced and fortified here in Alaska. There is something special in knowing that the food we are serving to our families, was sown, grown, harvested, prepared, inspected and delivered by Alaskans.

You may have heard the statistic, “95% of the food that Alaskans eat is not from Alaska”. Our modest operation (among many, many others) is working to fix that disturbing statistic. Not just because food shipped to the last frontier burns up all that diesel. Not because a large portion of that imported food is owned and benefits gigantic global corporations that may put more emphasis on profit than quality. Not just because buying food grown/made/prepared in Alaska keeps our local economies brisk.

We do it, because in Alaska we support our neighbors. And in this state, our neighborhood stretches from Hyder to Utqiagvik. We think every one of our neighbors deserves good food. If there is someone in this gigantic expanse of geography that we call home, that is committed to improving our food security, we need to be committed to them.

There is tremendous risk involved in daring to “feed Alaska”. But in that risk, a solution emerges. Alaska’s food security. For thousands of years people in Alaska have secured the healthiest possible fare, from the sea, on the hoof and from the field. 5,000 years ago, Alaskans' diet wasn’t constituted of 95% imported foods. And for thousands of years before and after that point. This 95% statistic is novel. It hasn’t been the case for most of history. Change has already happened when Alaskans shifted to imported food in a brief window of 80 years.

We say, together we can start to change it back.

That’s why today, we are endorsing Alaska Flour Company’s newest offering, A new line of Frozen Pizzas.

These tasty pizzas are prepared by hand in Delta Junction, AK. The crust on these Alaskan pies are made with flour from barley. Not just any barley. Sunshine Hulless Barley, an heirloom grain that has been battle tested season after season, whilst growing strong under the midnight sun. Every year, this wonderful grain gets better than the season prior.

Considering many pundits, skeptics and state officials thought Alaska was “too far North” to have sustainable agriculture, its a miracle that some of our neighbors had the foresight to defy the critics and push forward. At Alaska Means Business, we really like defying the critics, especially when they were so wrong. This summer, we invite you to do the research for yourself and make the trip on Route 2 or 4 to Delta Junction. You will find a collective of farmers, ranchers and dairy producers on 73,000 acres of incredible Alaskan Agriculture that is clearly not, “Too Far North”! And, yes, some of that agriculture, will go on to become PIZZA!

These pizzas from Alaska Flour Company can be found in the freezer section of more and more grocery stores every day, so keep your eyes peeled, and we thank everyone for supporting this Eat Alaska First Initiative.

PS

We will be working/featuring more and more Alaskan food producers and the wonderful food they are putting on our tables every day. If you are an Alaskan food producer, we would love to have you on our radar.

If you are so inclined, shoot us an email and tell us who you are, where in AK you are, and what your are growing/raising/producing. friends@alaskameansbusiness.com
