From the Farmer

As a young man, I often heard my dad talk about how fast time seemed to pass for him. I couldn’t imagine how it passed for him so fast and dragged interminably for me. At some point in the last 20 years, I must have crossed over into that time warp because the days speed by so fast I can hardly keep up.
The last two weeks have been a blur of activity as we approach the end of winter and gear up for summer production. On the farm, we are cleaning seed, working on equipment, and finalizing the plans for planting. In the mill, we are building up the warehouse inventory because I will be in the field for most of May, but orders for products will still need to go out. The bakery is busier than ever with keeping the pizza market supplied with locally grown awesomeness, even as we ramp up to produce the dinner rolls, cookies, brownies, and buns to supply the summer rush of tourists.
It seems like this was the shortest winter I’ve had in 41 years here. The passage of time has been so fast I haven’t been able to squeeze all the fun out of it, but I can’t wait for summer. Spring brings the farm to life again and I love sneaking into the bakery to ask the bakers for a roll or cookie during the middle of the day. Those rolls will be heading to the Salmon Bake at Pioneer Park in Fairbanks soon. Our Black Gold Brownies will be going to the Riverboat Discovery, and our cookies are available at Sunrise Bagel and Espresso shops. You can find our Cream of Barley Cereal and cookies as you ride the Alaska Railroad this summer.
It is a great way to experience the taste of Alaska as you travel around this marvelous place we call home. Don’t let this summer get away from you. Just grab it by the ears and hold on tight.
